Pantone’s Colour Institute forecasts global colour trends and advises companies on colour in brand identity and product development. Each year the institute chooses a Colour of the Year which symbolises design trends and cultural mood.
Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2018 is Ultra Violet.
In honour of 2018’s hottest hue we’ve pulled together some ultra violet inspiration with a selection of seating we have manufactured in various shades of purple. We also round-up some of the best purple upholstery fabrics to show you some of the options available if you fancy updating your interiors in line with the latest colour trend.
Although red still seems to be the most popular colour choice for theatres, in recent years we have seen many venture away from this traditional favourite and opt for purple tones. From muted mauves to vibrant velvets, our fabric suppliers offer a selection of purples to make your auditorium stand out from the crowd.
The Orion auditorium seating we installed in the theatre below left was upholstered in purple fabric from the Sunbury Reno Velvet range.
The purples in Sunbury Reno Velvet Fabric Range are Reno 7609 – Purple and Reno 7610 – Burgundy/Purple.
When it comes to lecture theatres, we’ve installed a wide variety of different coloured seats over the years. Whether you want a single shade or multiple tones, there are a range of different purples to help you create the desired look. The three images above show how different shades of purple can be used to create very different looks in a lecture theatre.
The Diploma seating above left was upholstered in 3 complimentary tones of purple and pink and seats were positioned in a random pattern at the client’s request.
One of our most recent installations, the Diploma seating in the university lecture theatre above centre is upholstered in Tarot from the Xtreme fabric range. This rich, deep purple fabric is beautifully contrasted with the beech under-seat boards to create a very different look and feel.
The Aspire lecture theatre seating (above right) was installed in alternate rows of purple and deep red to give a striking and vibrant look.

Waiting rooms are often pretty uninspiring places but this hospital used bright purple and pink seating clashed with bold orange walls to create a corridor waiting area that looks anything but dull – the scheme even won a design award. Anti-microbial vinyl is the seat covering of choice in most health care environments and our supplier, Chieftain has a selection of purples in its Just Colour range.
This hospital seating was upholstered with Just Colour vinyl in Candy, Grape and Lilac.
Other purples in the range pictured from left to right are Damson, Professor Plum, Ultra Violet and Purple Rain.
Purple is also making its way into the office and can make a refreshing change from traditional blue, black or red.
Deep purple office chairs co-ordinate nicely with neutral greys in this meeting room.
Vivid pinks and purples can brighten up a break-out area.
Purple seats add a bright pop of colour in this neutral reception area.
Whether you agree with Pantone’s latest colour choice, or if Ultra Violet is not to your taste, the colour you choose for your seating can help set the mood and tone of your venue. With so many different shades of purple available you can mute it down or make a bold statement, co-ordinate or clash it with other colours.
